ANGLICISMS IN THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

In the globalized and interconnected business landscape, the English language exerts a significant influence on the corporate environment. Words, expressions, and concepts of English origin, known as anglicisms, permeate corporate language in various parts of the world, including Brazil. This study aims to investigate the use of anglicisms in the business environment in the city of Itapira, considering the different hierarchical levels within a company. The analyzed use of anglicisms was found to be integrated into the Portuguese language, not only in everyday interactions through social media but also in the corporate setting through jargon and terminology. The research method was bibliographic and exploratory, utilizing a questionnaire with multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question as a methodological tool. As a result, the study, which received more responses from the administrative sector, revealed that anglicisms are frequently used, aligning with the globalization process and the use of English as a lingua franca. It was also observed that there is a more positive than negative reception of English terms in the workplace. Another relevant finding was that the use of English words in the business context is perceived as a synonym of knowledge according to the respondents' perception, suggesting an association between literacy and proficiency in the use of anglicisms. Moreover, all fourteen English terms analyzed were perceived by respondents as "easy to understand," indicating the incorporation of these terms into business communication. Notably, "communication" was the highlighted word resulting from the word cloud generated from responses to the open question, which inquired about the respondents' opinions on the use of anglicisms in the business context. In conclusion, it is important for companies to keep up with the trends of an increasingly global and internationalized job market, with English serving as the lingua franca, and anglicisms reflecting this reality.
